Cognitive Behavioral Therapy & Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is based on the idea that negative thought patterns can lead to unwanted emotions and behaviors. By identifying and challenging these distorted thoughts, we can learn to change our emotional responses and behaviors.

CBT is widely used to treat conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health disorders. It is evidence-based and has been shown to be effective in helping individuals develop healthier ways of thinking and coping.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy developed to help us manage distressing emotions, improve relationships, and reduce self-destructive behaviors. Originally designed for treating borderline personality disorder, DBT is now used to treat a variety of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices and focuses on balancing both acceptance and change. The therapy is structured around four key skill areas: mindfulness (staying present in the moment), distress tolerance (coping with difficult situations), emotion regulation (managing and changing intense emotions), and interpersonal effectiveness (improving communication and relationships).

We utilize a combination of these therapeutic modalities to improve your confidence in both managing and reframing unhelpful thought patterns.

Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic model that views every human being as a system of protective and wounded inner parts guided by a core Self. It teaches that the mind is naturally multiple—and that this multiplicity is healthy—because, like members of a family, inner parts can be pushed into extreme roles but also have valuable inherent qualities. Together, we work to connect with our core Self and build a greater understanding of our parts and the perspectives those parts carry with a goal of altering the extreme roles some of our parts may play.

IFS was developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s and shows promising results for the treatment of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more.

Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-focused therapy that aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies and nervous systems. It focuses on releasing, recovering, and increasing resilience when we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze. SE was created by Dr. Peter Levine after he observed and recognized that animals are constantly under threat with no signs of trauma being stuck in their systems.

Together, we will incorporate SE practices to ensure appropriate focus on nervous system responses to trauma.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach designed to help us process and heal from traumatic experiences. Developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is particularly effective for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), though it can also be used for other mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and phobias.

EMDR works by helping us reprocess traumatic memories in a way that reduces their emotional impact. During an EMDR session, I will guide you through recalling distressing memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, taps, or tones. This process is believed to help the brain reprocess the traumatic memory, allowing the individual to integrate it in a less distressing way.
